Water and sanitation

As a result of overcrowding and the heavy consumption of ground water and increasing quantities of sanitary  wastes are being returned to the ground which has the potential to impact on the quality of the groundwater. The groundwater is totally unusable for any purpose and the necessity was handled at an individual capacity by installing rain water tanks but due to lack of enough storage the issue was left very uncertain. In the year 1996, the government has implemented sanitation system by the local initiation to protect the fresh groundwater lens and providing safe and environmentally sound disposal of sewage and waste water and o but drinking water issues were left unsolved till late 2004. But today a desalination water system is on a track, providing 24 hours services to all the households by a pipe network. The project was initiated local community and implemented Island Development Communitee with the support of government and aid agencies.
